Congrats to Sting & Rob Mathes on their Tony Award nominations for The Last Ship…

April 28, 2015

The Last Ship has been nominated for "Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre" and Rob Mathes has been nominated for "Best Orchestrations". Check out the full list of 2015 nominations at www.broadwayworld.com.

Sting told the New York Times that he was in the gym when the Tony Award nominations were announced this morning.

“I wasn’t waiting by the TV,” he said. “I thought I’d get on with my life.”

“The Last Ship,” his Broadway debut as a composer, closed in January. But Tony voters gave the show two nominations, for best original score and, for Rob Mathes, best orchestrations.

“I’m totally thrilled, especially that my arranger got nominated,” Sting said. “It’s totally deserved.”

How did it feel to be nominated for best score, a category with a list of winners that includes Stephen Sondheim and Richard Rodgers?

“I’m from England,” he said. “It’s pretty huge. I’ve had many nominations - Oscar nominations and I don’t know how many Grammys. This is new and wonderful.”

Is the nomination enough to make him want to come back to Broadway?

“I’ve had the best Broadway experience from start to finish,” he said. “I’ve had a great time doing this. If I feel compelled, I will be more than happy to.”

The 2015 Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City, on Sunday, June 7th on CBS.
